Nestled in the highlands of Ethiopia’s Guji region, Buku Hurufa is more than just a coffee—it’s a story of nature, tradition, and meticulous craftsmanship. From small farms averaging less than two hectares, these coffee cherries begin their journey at the Buku Hurufa washing station, a place where flavor and care come together. Built in 2020 by Lulo Coffee, the station focuses on environmentally friendly, water-conscious methods to bring out the best in each bean, ensuring the delicate floral notes and unique terroir shine through.

In this remote part of Guji, "Buku" means "dust," a nod to the ancient paths where Borena herders once traveled with their cattle. Today, it’s not dust but coffee that draws people to Buku Hurufa. The altitude here, at 2,120 meters, means cooler nights, slowing down cherry maturation and concentrating sugars in every bean. With flavors that are complex, dense, and vibrant, Buku Hurufa coffee captures the spirit of its high-altitude origins.

The Buku Hurufa coffee beans undergo a traditional natural process, drying on raised beds to lock in their rich, fruity flavors without needing much water—a nod to the mill’s dedication to protecting the nearby river and its surrounding communities. This river, known as Buku, flows on an incredible journey of its own, eventually reaching the Indian Ocean, just as the beans from Buku find their way to coffee lovers across the world.
